The test is aimed at evaluating the verbal ability, quantitative aptitude, logical & abstract reasoning and knowledge of current affairs. The following is a brief description of contents of the test paper.

Section A (English Language): Grammar, vocabulary, uncommon words, sentence completion, synonyms, antonyms, relationship between words & phrases and comprehension of passages.
Section B (Numerical Aptitude): Numerical calculation, arithmetic, simple algebra, geometry and trigonometry, Interpretation of graphs, charts and tables.

Section C (Thinking and Decision Making): Creative thinking, unfamiliar relationships, verbal reasoning, finding pattern strends and Assessment of figures & diagrams.

Section D (General Awareness): Knowledge of current affairs and other issues related to trade, industry, economy, sports, culture and science.

                                            MCA SYLLABUS

(i) MATHEMATICS

Modern Algebra: Idempotent law, identities, complementary laws, D emorgan’s theorem, mapping, inverse relation, equivalence relation, Piano’s Axiom, definition of rational numbers and integers through equivalence relation.

Algebra:- Surds, solution of simultaneous and quadratic equat ions, arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progression, Binomial theorem for any index, logarithms, exponential and logarithmic series, determinants.

Probability: Definition, dependent and independent events, numerical problems on addition and multiplication of probability, theorems of probability.

Trigonometry: Simple identities, trigonometric equations, prope rties of triangles, use of mathematical tables, solution of triangles, height and distance, inverse functions, DeMoiver’s theorem.

Co-Ordinate Geometry: Co-ordinate geometry of the straight lines, pair of straight lines, circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola and their properties.

Calculus: Differentiation of function of functions, tangents and normal, simple examples of maxima of minima, limits of function, integration of function (by parts, by substitution and by partial fraction), definite integral (application to volumes and surfaces of frustums of sphere, cone and cylinder).

Vectors: Position vector, addition and subtraction of vectors, scalar and vector products and their applications.

Dynamics: Velocity, composition of velocity, relative velocity, acceleration, composition of acceleration, motion under gravity, projectiles, laws of motions, principles of conservation of momentum and energy, direct impact of smooth bodies, pulleys.

Statics: Composition of co-planar, concurrent and parallel forces, moments and couples, resultant of set of c oplanar forces and conditions of equilibrium, determination of Centroides in simple case, problems involving friction.

(ii) STATISTICS

Theory of probability, Mean, Median, Mode, Dispersion and Standard Deviation.

(iii) LOGICAL ABILITY

  • Mechanics of solids and fluids: States of matter young's modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus of rigidity, variations of pressure with depth, Buoyant forces and Archimedes principle, Pascal's law, Bernoulli's theorem and its application, surface energy, surface tension, angle of contact, capillary rise, coefficient of viscosity, viscous force, terminal velocity, Stoke's law, stream line motion, Reynold's numbers.
  • Heat and thermodynamics: First law of thermodynamics, specific heat of an ideal gas at constant volume and constant pressure, relation between them, thermodynamics process (reversible, irreversible, isothermal, adiabatic), second law of thermodynamics, concept of entropy and concept of absolute scale, efficiency of a Carnot engine, thermal conductivity, Newton's law of cooling, black body radiation, Wien's displacement law, Stefan's law.
  • Wave: Wave motion, phase, amplitude and velocity of wave, newton's formula for longitudinal waves, propagation of sound waves in air, effect of temperature and pressure on velocity of sound, Laplace's correction, Principle of superposition, formation of standing waves, standing waves in strings and pipes, beats, Doppler's effect.
  • Electrostatics: Coulomb's law, electric field and potential due to point charge, dipole and its field along the axis and perpendicular to axis, electric flux, Gauss's theorem and its applications to find the field due to infinite sheet of charge, and inside the hallow conducting sphere, capacitance, parallel plate capacitor with air and dielectric medium between the Plates, series and parallel combination of capacitors, energy of a capacitor, displacement currents.

Test Duration 

The test duration is for a total time of 2 hours and 50 minutes (170 minutes). PWD/DA candidates with
scribe requirements will be allowed an extra hour. All candidates will start the test at the same time.
Candidates are to remain at their seats for the entire duration of the test even if they complete their
test early. The Submit button will be enabled only upon completion of test time.
If for any reason, the candidate has to leave the testing hall, he/she will not be allowed to re-enter the
hall. In such circumstances, the test would be considered incomplete for the candidate.
At no point during the test, the candidate should touch the keyboard. Doing so will lock the terminal. All
answer choices should be made using the mouse.

Test Format 

The medium of the test is in English language for all candidates. The test has 100 multiple choice 
questions across two sections. The two sections are:

 1. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation 50 
2.   Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning 50


Candidates may attempt any section first. The questions can be answered out of sequence too. And the
candidate can also toggle between sections and attempt questions. An on-screen timer will mark
remaining minutes for the test. Three (3) points will be awarded for each correct answer; one (1) point 
will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no penalty for questions that are left unanswered.

A panel on the right-hand side will display the status of your questions in four colours that indicate the following: 
 Green – Answered questions 
Red - Unanswered questions
White - Questions not viewed
 Violet - Marked for review

CAT-2014

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a  held in India. This test scores a person on the bases of quantitative abilitydata interpretationverbal ability and logical reasoning. The) started this exam and use the test for selecting students for their business administration programs. The test is conducted every year by one of the  based on a policy of rotation. In August 2011, it was announced  Indian Institutes of Technology  and Indian Institute of Science would also use the CAT scores, instead of the Joint Management Entrance Test, to select students for their management  from 2012-14 year.

HISTORY -

      Before 2009, CAT was a paper based test conducted on a single day for all candidates. The pattern, number of questions and duration have seen considerable variations over the years.

On 1 May 2009, it was announced that CAT would be a Computer Based Test starting from CAT 2009. The American firm been entrusted With the responsibility of conducting the computer based test. The first computer based CAT was marred by technical snags.[6] The issue was so serious that it prompted the Government of India to seek a report  The two viruses that attacked the system display of the test, causing severe slow down.

Exam format

The Common Admission Test (CAT), like virtually all large-scale exams,  multiple forms, or versions, of the test. Hence there are two types of scores involved: a raw score and a scaled score.
The raw score is calculated for each section based on the number of questions one answered correctly, incorrectly, or omitted. Candidates are given +3 points for each correct answer and -1 point for each incorrect answer. No points are given for questions that are not answered. The raw scores are then adjusted through a process called equating. Equated raw scores are then placed on a common scale or metric to ensure appropriate interpretation of the scores. This process is called scaling.

 CAT Exam 2014 Details of Eligibility and Paper Pattern -
The CAT (Common Admission Test) is conducted every year by the  Indian Institute of Management, the most premiere management institutes, to admit students in different management courses of two years duration.  Some other top management institutes in the country. Eligibility for Admissions:
The candidates should possess the Bachelors Degree in Commerce/ Science/ Arts / any other disciplines with a minimum of 50% marks / equivalent  in the concerned qualifying examinations for this purpose.

The CAT Exam is conducted in the online modes having objective type multiple choice based questions on the following main sections:

Total Time Allotted: 155 Minutes
Marking Criteria:
The candidates will get three marks for each correct answer attempted by them while there will be deduction of the specified marks for the negative attempts made by the candidates. Hence, the candidates should attempt only those questions about which they are sure.
Date of Exam:
The CAT Exam is mostly organized in the months of October and November every year. There is a testing window of 21 days for all the exams.
